Hi i started panning and sluicing for gold about a year ago and i recently bought a metal detector and was wondering will metal detectors pick up black sand? Also where could u locate black sand? And also where are good places to look for placer gold? Caves? Mines? What?

It cant be something too big like a pickaxe. We can't go into the industrial revolution. Keep it to the oregon, santa fe, mormon trail and gold rush.

Exhibits like this often overlook the effect on Native Americans. Perhaps a map showing all of the tribes that were forcibly relocated. Or if you want something more visual, there are some wonderful old paintings of the Cherokee Trail of Tears, when the tribe was forced out of their homeland and had to walk all the way to Oklahoma.

Question by : Can you pan for gold in any old creek and find some?
Me and my brother have gotten into trying to pan for gold. Problem is we cant drive anywhere. We have a creek in the woods in our backyard and our wondering if we could go down there and pan for gold and find some. We both would really like any help. Thanks in advance.

The only way to find gold in a creek is for there to actually be gold nearby somewhere that has washed downstream into the creek. If there is a vein of gold in the hills somewhere nearby your area that this stream could have passed, then panning there is a good idea. If there has never been gold found in your vicinity, you're only practicing when you're panning your creek.

I’m thinking of picking up “panning” as a hobby, but I heard that you need a special license to do that.

In Ontario you can buy the pans at many locations I have not heard of a licence best to contact your dept of natural resources for the straight goods.
