Question by BMW M6: Should I invest in this??????????????????
Alright, I am 15 years old. I really need to make money but I have no idea how. I have tried everything. Any jobs I would get would not provide a steady source of income that I need. You have to be 16 to work anyways. I have tried online surveys but it is not worth if.

Anyways, I'll get to the point. After checking the price of gold today, it made me wonder. Could prospecting pay off some day? Now, I live in California, I live close to motherlode county etc. I went to a river with my friends one day and I started panning. I found an area that looked good for panning and after about 3 hours of nonstop panning, I had a little under a half gram of flakes. That is not worth that much but hey it's money.

Now, If I wanted to get serious about this, I could invest my money into prospecting equipment, dredges, drywashers, pans, sluice boxes, a metal detector etc. If I did this, I could work that river all summer long and see how much gold I would have in the end. I could possibly even find a large nugget but that would be very rare.

I have no idea how this would go though, it would be a complete gamble but it could possibly be worth the money in the long run.

What do you think about this?

My father is a pretty serious gold prospector. He has been doing it as a regular hobby for about 5 years and is a member of a gold prospecting club. Over 5 years he has found about 00-00 worth of gold - but he spent about 00 on a top of the line metal detector. I think that most of the gold that is easy to find has already been found. So I think that gold prospecting should be considered a hobby rather than a serious money making activity. If you have the gold bug and you enjoy it, then go for it and best of luck with it. But there may be more profitable activities that you could put your time into - when I was your age I did music tutoring and made quite good money from it. When I was a bit older I did maths tutoring. Maybe you could brainstorm 10-20 ideas of activities you could do to make money (washing cars, mowing lawns, tutoring in your area of expertise etc.) You could ask family and friends for other ideas if you can't think of them yourself. Take care...........

PS - Hey BMW. If you like my answer then please award me best answer as I am trying to get the points to get to level 2. Best of luck earning that money for your BMW M6!

Question by Ozymandias: What should I look for in a gold pan, to go gold panning in Alaska?
My family is moving to the Fairbanks Alaska area, and my wife and I had the idea of gold panning during the summer months while we are there as an outdoor recreation activity, something the whole family could enjoy.

While we MAY end up with a small sluice in a year or two, for right now we are going to be restricted to panning.

Our first goal is to get the family panning enough to scavange up enough to make me a ring.

Looking at gold pans I see many different types, and I was wondering which was best?

I see ones with DEEP ruffles cut 90 degrees, but these seem very large grooves to me, then there are some with just a small lip, and some are smooth.

Then there are the sizes, 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch...

and Colors... black, green, orange, pink...

Could use some info...

Anyone know a good brand of gold pan?

The larger the pan the more dirt it will hold. Plastic pans work all right. Be sure and wash them with a good dish soap. If you go with metal, try what my grandfather did. get a small fire going and put the pan in up side down. This burns all the oil off and darkens the metal allowing you to see the gold better. if you go with plastic try the darker colors, black, dark green . also get a plastic strainer or colander . put your dirt in it and shake to eliminate the larger rocks. be sure you put your pan under the strainer first.

xbox live is fun but it depends on how much time you can spend on your computer and how much time you intend on wasting. If you have enough time for World of Warcraft and have a lot of time to be on a computer, then of course, but if your looking for things to invite friends over to play with you and if you don't have the best computer out there then I would go with xbox live, especially if you don't have much time to waste and you want faster results, but if you hate repetitiveness world of warcraft time card, and xbox live sucks on regular xbox so if you have a 360, then thats when I would recommend xbox live. I have both of those things, so yes I can rate on both. And I do like World of Warcraft. Also, if your gonna get Halo 3 when it comes out then if I were you I might want to have some xbox live with me at that time.
