Question by YoMommaAteTheFly!!!: are gold panning and placer mining the same thing?
I'm doing a national history day assignment and I was doing research in wikipedia about gold panning and then wikipedia said about the history of placer mining. so is placer the same thing as gold panning? Thanks for reading!

gold panning is a type of placer mining. It is old-school and small scale. Placer mining simply refers to deposits that are not lode deposits (lode deposits being contained within a host rock, like a vein). Placer deposits used to be veins that are weathered (the mountain with the vein in it is completely washed away over millions of years) and transported, and concentrated by water.

Question by Sarah: Looking for actual gold panning sites in VA?
My dad's birthday is coming up later this year and he's in poor health, the one thing he really wants to do is to find a legal and legit place in Virginia to go do some gold panning (even if he finds nothing, he just wants the experience) I've looked online myself but the one place I found say that park no longer offers it. Does anyone know of a place I can take him later this spring?

any creek in the mountains....... don't really thing u'll find gold but u might....

Mail order, I would suggest, or just use a skillet. Try this link, and look for gold panning clubs in the US. They can tell you what to look for, and how to do it. I don't know if Dubai has gold in the creek sediments, but then again, Missouri in the US has gold from the Rocky mountains around 600 miles away. Look at geologic maps to indicate areas of interest.

well its unlikely ull be robbed most goldminers ud meet are pretty good guys and yes u can carry a gun and yes u can find gold enough to pay for life u just have to find where its at. Just remember though that 80% of the worlds gold could be ran through a window screen its very small but its very valuable like right now an ounce is right around 1000 dollars so yeah go do it its fun and it can be good money.

Question by jack of all trades: How do it get into mining or panning for gold?
I know very little about it besides that unlike the early days of california where you can pretty much pick a spot and mine/pan, these days almost all the land is owned and it would be illegal or trespassing to do so.
what i do know is that i can possible find some gold, a few grams a day and being an active precious metals investor, gold is worth around 00/oz right now and i like money.

how do i get into panning/mining for gold, how much does it cost (I don't have much money - for equipment and gas will guzzle the rest of the marginal budget), and where do i go?

I live in South Orange County, due to high cost of gas, can't really travel more than 130 miles. basically that's my house to barstow or my house to the us/Mexico border or my house to ventura.

Most surface gold has been claimed and cleaned a very long time ago. Finding gold naturally in nature is extremely rare these days and almost all gold is excavated from mines. Sorry :S
