Question by Spunky: Gold Shaft Mining 1850's and Now?
Out of curiosity, whats the difference and how did they gold mine during now and then? i mean as in the underground mining, not gold panning =] All help appreciated! I need to do a comparison of the two Thanks
Best answer:
Answer by Tashkent T Today, gold mines contain shafts that carry personnel and equipment as much as 2995 metres in one drop / rise as found at the South Deep gold mine in South Africa. This is possible as a result of titanium metal hoists and is a fairly recent advance in technology. There are also underground mining accessed by ramps that allow large trucks into and out of the mines.
In 1850, there were gold mines that accessed ore both through horizontal development into the sides of hills (adits) and by vertical drop shafts. Sometimes, people would have to climb down into their work places - this still goes on within the informal mining sector in parts of Africa and Asia. Within the formal sector, small drop shafts (by hoist) and adits continue to be used.
The biggest difference today, is a breakthrough in mineral processing technology that took place in 1886 which, interestingly was the same year that the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa were first significantly worked.
The technological breakthrough was that extraction of the gold through dissolution in sodium cyanide meant that gold need no longer be recovered by gravitational separation. In practise this meant that mining could continue to depth well below the water table / oxide cap into the sulphide zone. Gold ore within the sulphide zone is usually (but not essentially) occuring as microscopic particles within such sulphides as pyrite and arsenopyrite. By crushing this ore and dissolving in cyanide, the gold can now be economically recovered.
In 1850, gold mining did not normally go beyond the oxide zone. Within the oxide zone, the original pyrite mineralogy has been oxidised to iron oxides and was therefore amenable to gravitational separation.
A further problem in 1850 was the effeciency of mine pumps. Today, mining at 3000 metres below surface does not prove a problem as dewatering and cool air circulation make such work not just possible but relatively easy. In 1850, it was not just the change to sulphide mineralogy that posed a problem but inefficient pumps also made access to the lowest levels difficult too.

Question by YoMommaAteTheFly!!!: are gold panning and placer mining the same thing?
I'm doing a national history day assignment and I was doing research in wikipedia about gold panning and then wikipedia said about the history of placer mining. so is placer the same thing as gold panning? Thanks for reading!
Best answer:
Answer by nobody@9000ft gold panning is a type of placer mining. It is old-school and small scale. Placer mining simply refers to deposits that are not lode deposits (lode deposits being contained within a host rock, like a vein). Placer deposits used to be veins that are weathered (the mountain with the vein in it is completely washed away over millions of years) and transported, and concentrated by water.

Question by emileelee: Does anyone know a good place for mining and panning for gems and gold?
Hey! The closer to spartanburg S.C is better. Don't go as far as Tennesee.

Answer by Heinz M If anyone had such a place, you don't really think they would just give it up to you and the world, do you?
Keeping my special place to myself, sorry.

Question by Bean: What kinds of equipment was used in mining in South Africa in the 1880s until now. How has it developed?
I'm doing a project on the history of mining (mostly gold and diamonds) in South Africa and am struggling to find information about the equipment and machinery used in the past when mining in SA first began. Any information or websites about the development in mining technology and equipment would be greatly appriciated.
Best answer:
Answer by dougger Most of the mining equipment used in the 1880s is very similar to what is used now. The difference is the power source to drive the machinery. Compressed air and water and steam were the main sources, plus animal power (human and beasts of burden). Drills, mechanical shovels have modernized a bit but not all that much. They just now use more electricity and diesel engines for power and traction. Compressed air is still often the preferred source of power for underground tools partly because it is cheap but also because it helps ventilation. But still the machines are made to be heavy and built for long term use, which means ultimately the work is still heavy and requires muscle. SOme weight has been taken off stopers (a drill for drilling upward) and other hand controlled tools, using air to hold them in place but still they are clumsy.
Mine design has not changed much although the designing of them is now usually down by computer. But the results often look the same, more or less.
Underground surveying and mine planning has changed a lot with the use of lasers, radios and computers. And GPS on surface .
Try looking at EMJ (engineering and mining journal) to get started. From there you can get plenty of general information and web sites.
You will be a bit surprised at how similar the tools in use today look like those from 120 years ago.

Question by jack of all trades: How do it get into mining or panning for gold?
I know very little about it besides that unlike the early days of california where you can pretty much pick a spot and mine/pan, these days almost all the land is owned and it would be illegal or trespassing to do so.
what i do know is that i can possible find some gold, a few grams a day and being an active precious metals investor, gold is worth around 00/oz right now and i like money.
how do i get into panning/mining for gold, how much does it cost (I don't have much money - for equipment and gas will guzzle the rest of the marginal budget), and where do i go?
I live in South Orange County, due to high cost of gas, can't really travel more than 130 miles. basically that's my house to barstow or my house to the us/Mexico border or my house to ventura.
Best answer:
Answer by Jay From Ottawa Most surface gold has been claimed and cleaned a very long time ago. Finding gold naturally in nature is extremely rare these days and almost all gold is excavated from mines. Sorry :S
