Question by Ozymandias: What should I look for in a gold pan, to go gold panning in Alaska?
My family is moving to the Fairbanks Alaska area, and my wife and I had the idea of gold panning during the summer months while we are there as an outdoor recreation activity, something the whole family could enjoy.

While we MAY end up with a small sluice in a year or two, for right now we are going to be restricted to panning.

Our first goal is to get the family panning enough to scavange up enough to make me a ring.

Looking at gold pans I see many different types, and I was wondering which was best?

I see ones with DEEP ruffles cut 90 degrees, but these seem very large grooves to me, then there are some with just a small lip, and some are smooth.

Then there are the sizes, 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch...

and Colors... black, green, orange, pink...

Could use some info...

Anyone know a good brand of gold pan?

The larger the pan the more dirt it will hold. Plastic pans work all right. Be sure and wash them with a good dish soap. If you go with metal, try what my grandfather did. get a small fire going and put the pan in up side down. This burns all the oil off and darkens the metal allowing you to see the gold better. if you go with plastic try the darker colors, black, dark green . also get a plastic strainer or colander . put your dirt in it and shake to eliminate the larger rocks. be sure you put your pan under the strainer first.

Question by Bear Crap: Would you be interested in a new survival training trip behind Glacier Bay Alaska in the summer?
This is a vast area that is seldom explored that’s north of Glacier Bay, north west of Haines Alaska and west of the Village Klukwan, and west from along the Haines hwy and the Chikat river. From this location you would travel buy truck, then river boat, then atv’s into the area until the equipment would be left and we go on foot the rest of the way.

Here is a Google info on this area
Here is the map location on Google maps;
59.366794, -136.109619
Here is the next area;
59.286228,-136.211243
And the next; 59.275003,-136.212616
And the way out; 59.247628,-135.86792

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=59.366794,+-136.109619+to:59.247628,-135.86792&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrcr=1&mrsp=2,1&sz=10&sll=59.288332,-136.054687&sspn=0.232853,1.09314&ie=UTF8&ll=59.288332,-136.054687&spn=0.232853,1.09314&t=h&z=10&lci=com.panoramio.all,com.youtube.all,org.wikipedia.en,com.google.webcams

If you use the map setting you can see it’s a very remote area near Haines Alaska. There are also points for reference with wikipedi and youtube so you can get a better idea of this place.

Ok a few friends and I are thinking about starting a survival tour guide into this area. We want to know if people would be interested in this. It would be a week stay with food and transportation provided with skilled Native Americans and Experienced Alaskan guides to teach survival methods.
This area in the summer has all sorts of wildlife, bears, moose, goats, wolves, eagles spawning salmon and an abundance of edible plants. And there is gold in the streams for panning.

We don’t know what we will charge yet. But we first need to know how many would be interested in going on such a trip.

So would you like to go on such a trip for a week in the summer in this area?

Thanks.
Any comments welcome.
Ask you friends too.
This is not solicitation as we are not a business as yet. We are merely doing field research to see if this is possible. We have been in that area so getting there isn’t a problem. But we still have to figure the costs involved and pay for all the licensing, permits, insurance and equipment, etc and everything else before we do anything. So we are not, I repeat not, looking for customers at this time. But we are looking for numbers of people who might be interested and their view points to determine if there is an interest in this.
Please note that there are clickable places on the map with photos and information.
What about these things to do; trap making, making moccasins and leather clothing, weaving baskets, making primitive weapons and learning how to use them, salmon fishing, making fire the primitive way, building primitive shelters, swimming, berry picking, solar still and water purification, navigation by stars, photography, gold panning, collecting precious stones, marksmanship with bow and arrow and provided rifles?
Have any more suggestions?
We will have 5 guides 3 male and 2 female, also thinking about offering ½ price to a few to help out and we will have two teenagers (18yr) as packers.
I am dead serious about this as I may not have that much longer on earth and want to try this. I have some years of experience as a hunting guide and I have 3 people willing to match my ,000 investment and we can get loans if need be. I value the advice of the people here. So I am asking here first, then it’s to the travel section with a similar Q.

Question by Ramjet: Will a foreigner get shot at for prospecting gold in Alaska?
I'm from Europe, I want to invest some of my money in mining equipment and prospect for gold in Alaska, but I just wonder if US citizens will shoot at me for trying to dig out gold, because the economy is in a ramshackle? Is it safe as long as I have all the formal documents and is there legally, will the citizens still shoot at me?

You're watching too many silly television programs. You probably will not be shot at, but without the proper documents you could be arrested for trespassing. Prospectors are VERY territorial.
