Go to a pie shop, buy a pie, eat it, wash the pan. Not much to it, really.

Me again is spot on. A pan having a sloping side is the important thing. Even an old frying pan is OK. The purpose of the groove in a gold pan is to prevent heavy grains washing over the side; but with practice, it is not necessary. The best thing to do is to practice (say, with a pan or pie plate). Take some brass filings (file off some brass from an old tap or other garden fitting), and mix them with sand. Then practice, until you can recover all the filings. If you can do that, you can pan for gold.Gold is much heavier than brass; and it is actually quite easy to recover, with a little practice.
